Weekly Devotional

Welcoming God as a Child

Jeremiah 11:18-20
Psalm 54
James 3:13—4:3,7-8a
Mark 9:30-37

All the greatness humankind can fashion for itself is put to shame by the glory God gives to childlike faith. In the gospel reading two weeks from today, Jesus will tell his disciples, “whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it” (Mark 10:15). Everything is upside-down in Jesus’ teachings—children know more than scholars, servants become greater than masters, to die is to win life, the last shall be first and the first shall be last. In today’s gospel, Jesus insists that welcoming a young child means welcoming Jesus, which means welcoming our all-powerful God.

Surely childlike faith is one thing, but a child standing in God’s place? Jesus in the form of a little kid we can welcome with open arms? Yes. This is the kind of unexpected reversal that the Almighty seems to love. For God is not only welcomed through a child; God became a child.

In ten weeks it will be Advent, and we will be asked again to stretch our imaginations and attempt to fathom the idea of God living as a baby. Do we truly welcome this truth of God’s identity and ways? Can we truly welcome all that God’s plan brings us, having faith that our journey has been walked before, believing that the one who has fully completed it returns to our sides to guide us on our way?

Let us, as little children, lift our arms toward our God in prayer. Let us welcome each other in peace. And let us open our arms to receive all that lies ahead of us.

Keeping the Faith: In 1978 Pastor Weber said: “You and I, and most of all, God knows what is absolutely necessary for the ‘at home’ life of a congregation: a sensitive and responsible Church Council, a dedicated and disciplined corps of church leaders in the Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, the strong support of the Lutheran Church Women, responsible and faithful leaders in stewardship and finance, loving and caring persons in social ministry, individuals in caring for the property of the church who take pride in the visible and material things, imaginative persons who lead with joy in their hearts in the ministry of music, persons who take deep care for our youth and express high priority in the future of God’s church and the leaders and workers of tomorrow, those who make provision for every worship service as custodians of the altar, and all of you who work behind the scenes and in the every day to let us see God’s love in fellowship and caring for one another.”

The Blessing of the Animals will be at Trinity at 5:00 pm on Sunday 7. October. Bring your hamsters, guinea pigs, dogs, horses, llamas, iguanas, snakes, frogs, and horses. Why is St. Francis the patron saint of ecology and animals? He took to heart the psalms when they say the animals praise God.
