Trinity Tidings November 19, 2020

From Pastor Kern

Dear People of Trinity
On Sunday, another church year comes to a close.  The Festival of Christ the King brings the annual journey of the church to a hopeful and festive close.
Of course our celebration is juxtaposed over the harsh reality of a pandemic and what seems to be an endless attack on the life we the people have built over our history.  Did you see the news about the heartbroken nurse being berated by her covid patient who was insisting they were not sick with covid, it was all a hoax – right before they were intubated?  Or the silent affirmation given by many elected representatives as legal challenges without foundation are mounted, one after the other?  Where has the truth gone?  And, more importantly, where are the saints willing to stand up for truth?
Even in the church, we cannot escape the divisions that are riven through our nation and world.  We do not view current events in the same way.   We do not all interpret the facts in the same way.  By now you have a pretty clear idea where I stand, but I want you to know, it’s a daily struggle.  Believe it or not, my touchstone through these days is the life of Jesus.  I’ve been thinking particularly about his actions through his life.  His words have been interpreted to justify many positions throughout history, but it seems to me his movments are unequivocal – he always moves towards the poor and forgotten, he includes the outcast, and he never backs down from power even when it nailed him to a cross.  I cannot begin to walk such a path with anything remotely close to perfection.  But in my best moments, I think I catch glimpses of that path through our current darkness, and I do my level best to get back on course.

Parking Lot Worship Service with Communion

Each Sunday in November at 4pm, we will holding a LIVE Communion service in the parking lot. Bring a mask and a lounge chair from home or sit in your car (we hope to have our new AM transmitter up and running this week, especially as the weather gets colder).  Due to restrictions, only 50 people will be able to participate. In case of rain, the service will be cancelled.
We will be collecting food donations for Living Faith Lutheran Church’s food pantry, alongside the offering plate. The items will be gathered and added to the next Food Drive delivery on December 19. Also, running this Sunday through December 6, we will be collecting new unwrapped toys for children infant to age 18 for Community Family Life Services Annual Give-a-Gift program. Bring your toy purchases to Sunday afternoon church services, or drop them off at the church office Monday, Wednesday, or Friday mornings.
Please use the link HERE to indicate you will be attending Trinity’s parking lot worship Sunday the 22nd. When replying, count all members of your household who will be attending (no need for members to reply individually).
If you prefer to RSVP by email or phone, please contact the office at Trinity ( or 301-881-7275).
[Please note: an RSVP ensures that we have prepared enough space for social distancing, as well as a preliminary count for Communion supplies and a means to reach you if services are cancelled.]
Volunteers Needed: Parking Lot Services run smoother when we have volunteers willing to help with Reader/Prayer Leader, Usher, Entrance Greeter, or Equipment Setup duties one or more Sundays in November/December. Signup link is HERE or contact the office as above to reserve your spot. Thank you!

Virtual services, Faith Formation resources, and musical meditations will continue to be posted on Trinity’s YouTube channel each week: (and subscribe!)

Advent Retreat Sessions

Join Valerie on Sunday mornings at 10:45 during Advent, starting November 29th, for some time of prayer, reflection, poetry, coloring, and quiet conversation. You will need to have 4 candles, pen/pencil, coloring tools, and a printed copy of the materials (2 pages) for the week. The links to the first Zoom session and the materials to print will be in next week’s and subsequent Tidings. See the Trinitarian for more details. Contact Valerie M ( with any questions.

Faith Formation Videos will be emailed on Fridays.

Food Drive–This Saturday

Our next food drive for the Living Faith Pantry in Rockville will be THIS Saturday, November 21, from 9:00 AM to noon in the main Trinity parking lot. The demand for food supplies remains very high. See more information on their current food needs and where you can send cash donations HERE. Thank you for your support of this ministry.

CFLS Give a Gift

This month we also have an opportunity to make the holidays brighter for children by donating holiday gifts through CFLS. This organization provides services to reentry women, survivors of domestic violence, homeless residents and their children in Washington, DC. Trinity is collecting new toys, games, books and clothes for children infant through 18 years old. Toys should be new and in their original packaging but not wrapped.

You may drop off your purchases during the Food Drive on the 21st, at Sunday Parking Lot Services, or at the church office Monday, Wednesday, or Friday mornings.

Lutheran World Relief Quilt Project: Phase Two

Thanks to fabric and batting donations from the Trinity community, together with a Thrivent grant obtained by Valerie M, we had the basis for the initial phase of this project. We now have six finished quilts and ten more in process.
We hope that others will want to participate in the next phase of this ministry. This would involve assembling quilt tops (independently) from prepared “kits” of pre-cut fabric, each containing enough to create a simple 60 x 80-inch quilt top, and including detailed instructions. (Only straight-line sewing would be required.) Please contact Julie N or the church office if you would be interested in learning more about these kits or in assisting with other aspects of quilt assembly.

Reverse Advent Calendar and Devotions

As a reverse Advent discipline, we are collecting items for the pantry at Living Faith. A full explanation is in the Trinitarian, including the list of daily items. Starting next week, the list of items AND the devotional piece for the upcoming week will be emailed out. Make this discipline work as you need; there are suggestions in the upcoming Trinitarian. If you have any questions, please contact Valerie M at Thank you for supporting the pantry.

2021 Stewardship Campaign is Underway

A series of letters and a pledge card have been sent to members and longtime friends of the congregation. Please consider prayerfully your blessings in the past year, and make a commitment to supporting Trinity’s mission in 2021. Please contact the church office ( if you did not receive one, and it will be mailed to you. Please return your completed card by November 29, either at Sunday Parking Lot Services, by mail, to the secure mailbox at the office entrance, or emailed to Carol B, Financial Secretary (
